- Built by Early Pandyas 1400 years ago & later renovated by Cholas, Pallavas, Cheras & Madurai Nayakas. Here Bhagwan Shiva & Devi Parvathi are worshipped as Swami Nellaiappar & Kanthimathi amman respectively.
Unsolved mystery of The musical pillars
- In Nellaiappar Temple since +1300 years.
- It consist of 48 pillars in total, each pillar made out of a single rock.
- When tapped these pillars produce the sound of 7 Classical music notes. These pillars are testimony to ancient Hindu understanding of sound and physical properties of rocks.
The unique feature of the temple is the 'Mani manadapam' located near the nandi mandapam with two giant pillars carved out of a single stone and each one is having 48 sub pillars which produce musical notes when struck.
