The world’s tallest statue was unveiled today in the western Indian state of Gujarat. At 597 feet, the sculpture is almost twice the height of the Statue of Liberty.

The £314m Statue of Unity, an effigy of the independence hero Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, stands at 182 meters, making it nearly twice the height of New York’s Statue of Liberty. Built in Gujarat, it is part of the ruling Hindu nationalist party’s efforts to rebrand what it calls ‘forgotten’ leaders
