Jio apps overtake WhatsApp, Facebook on Google Play

After taking the competition in India’s telecom space to a new level when Reliance Jio offered voice calls for free forever and cut down data costs, Jio apps have now beaten mobile messaging service WhatsApp and social networking website Facebook on Google Play.

Of the top 10 apps downloaded from the Google Play store in India, seven are from Jio family. WhatsApp is placed at third spot and Facebook is at 12th spot. MyJio app takes the top spot on the store while JioCinema is at second spot, revealed the top charts ranking on Google Play.

JioTV takes the fourth place, JioNet fifth, JioJoin sixth, JioMusic seventh and JioMags bags the 10th place on Google Play. While MyJio has seen 10 million downloads, all other apps have crossed the one million downloads mark. Eleven of the top 15 downloaded apps and 12 in top 20 belong to the Jio family.

Jio has also launched a new online shopping app AJIO that offers clothes, jewellery and accessories from more than 200 Indian and international brands. 

Reliance Jio: SIM card, 4G plans, apps and more

Last week, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani took announced that domestic phone calls from the Jio network will be free forever.

The data plans will also reflect the affordability for customers, with an effective base rate of 5 paise per MB or Rs 50 per GB, adding that based on the usage, the data tariff could go to as low as Rs 25 per GB. 

Reliance Jio Sim:
The Jio SIM-which so far was available only at Reliance Digital stores-is now being offered through multi-brand outlets and mobile phone shops. A major beneficiary of the offer would be users of devices such as iPhone, Xiaomi, Motorola and Lenovo who were not a part of the preview offer. 

Jio sim cards will be available at any telecom store that sells sim cards. To speed up the process, customers can make use of Aadhaar card for the eKYC process. Applicants must fill the Customer Application Form (CAF) and produce a couple of passport-size photographs to complete the process. Customers will receive their receipts on their email IDs and through SMS. 

The company will then verify the applicant's details via a phone call. The partner offer is the easiest way of getting a Reliance Jio SIM if you have any of the eligible phones. The Jio Preview offer has been extended to smartphones by Samsung, HTC, Micromax, Sony, Vivo, Intex, Lava, Gionee, Panasonic, Asus, Xolo, LG, Karbonn, Videocon, YU, Sansui, Alcatel, and TCL.

Reliance Jio 4G plans 
The firm started offering its 4G plans on Monday. The postpaid plans start at Rs 149 unlike prepaid, which start at Rs 19. Voice calls for Reliance Jio customers will not be chargeable. Jio users will not be required to pay roaming charges. Reliance Jio Preview offer is free for now, and users will be charged only from January 1, 2017. 

Reliance Jio plans come bundled with free access to Jio apps, including MyJio, JioChat, JioMoney, JioMusic etc. Content on these apps can only be accessed via the Jio network. The Rs 149 postpaid plan has 300 MB data offer, unlimited data at night (valid from 2 am to 5 am), 100 SMS, and 700 MB of data via the JioNet Hotspot on WiFi. 
 
The plan bears a validity of 1 month and also offers 100 free SMS per day. The firm also offers a 4GB plan which costs Rs 499 and gives users access to 8GB of free WiFi data. This WiFi data offer is via the JioNet Hotspot only. The 10GB plan is being offered at Rs 999, which comes with 20GB free WiFi data. The 20GB plan will cost you Rs 1,499 and additionally offer 40GB free WiFi data. The firm is also offering 35GB plan, which costs Rs 2,499 and comes with 70GB of free WiFi data. On the higher side, 60GB and 75GB 4G data plans are being offered at Rs 3,999 and Rs 4,999, respectively. They offer 120 GB and 150 GB of free WiFi data, respectively.

Reliance Jio uses a 4G-only network with VoLTE technology for phone calls. You will need a VoLTE capable phone to make Jio sim work. Reliance Retail's Lyf-branded smartphones are VoLTE-enabled and ready to use on the Jio network. You can also access the list of VoLTE-enabled phones on the Reliance Jio's website .

Reliance Jio MNP

If you want your phone number to remain the same and switch to Reliance Jio's network you should send a text message 'PORT' followed by your 10-digit mobile number to TRAI's central number for mobile number portability - 1900. A Unique Porting Code will be sent on your phone. You can go to the nearest Reliance Mobile store, fill in the required documents along with your porting code. Your address proof, ID proof and passport photographs will be required to complete the porting process. You will get a Reliance Jio sim card and once activated, you will have the same phone number as your previous carrier.
