'Dongchuan District' - China's Largest and Most Beautiful Red Land

Dongchuan Red Land is a new rising tourist destination near Kunming, loved by photographers and backpackers, and praised as "God's palette". These red lands, extending for nearly 50 kilometers (30 miles), are the most striking and distinctive in the world.
Dongchuan Red Land is about 250 kilometers (155 miles) northeast of Kunming, with an altitude of 1,800–2,600 meters (5,900–8,500 feet). It is located in Huashitou Country, Xinxiang Town, Dongchuan District, Kunming, Yunnan Province.
Even the people living there are not so aware or familiar with its existing beauty. But for those who have seen the pictures of the Red land, no one can resist being attracted to its beautiful scenery! Just like a painting of a great magnificent landscape.
The soil contains such components as oxidized iron and different kind of metallic minerals, after a long period of oxidation, gradually added and mixed in the soil that produced this extra-ordinary reddish brown soil.
Here major plants are canola, potato, oats and corn etc. When getting to the blossom season, each crop’s flower makes the colorful painting.
Scenic Spots:
Damakan Village: Looking down at the Damakan Village in the morning, you will enjoy the smoke from the kitchen chimneys, morning frogs above the red lands and clouds.Qicaipo: You can enjoy the different colors of the earth here, especially the dawn and sunrise.
Yuepuao：You can see the rural sceneries with well-arranged villages scattering around the red land.
Xiantang: Xiantang is called the grandest and most mysterious red land in Dongchuan District.
Luoxia Gou: Sunset is the most attracted scenery in “Luoxia gou”, but rare opportunity to see such burn cloud because of weather and season.
With gorgeous and colorful hues, the Dongchuan red land is favored by backpackers, hikers and photographers. It is seldom visited by general tourists for its remoteness and inadequate lodging facilities.

The Best Times to Visit
May to June:Photographers can capture strongly red fields just after ploughing and before the crops grow, and farming photos. Potato flowers opens in the summer and golden wheat decorates the red fields. With various crop colors, red earth, and blue sky, it's one of the best times to get blood red field photos.
September to November:
Autumn is another wonderful season to photo the red fields. Some fields will be turned over for new crops, and there are large expanses of highland barley and wheat. Yunnan's unique white cole flowers make the fields more colorful. This is another good time you should not miss.
Accommodation:
There are about 30 hotels in the area, but hotel facilities are limited. If you book a tour with us, you will stay in Hongtudi Impression Hotel — the best hotel in the area. However, Wi-Fi is only available in the hotel lobby, and breakfast is a traditional Chinese breakfast of rice porridge or noodles, eggs, and pickles.
Transportation:
Direct Bus from Kunming-HuagouKunming North Bus Station: The are only 2 daily buses to Fazhe passing by Huashitou Village(departure at 08：00 and 14:00). Travelers need to let the driver know that you need to get off at Huagou (huā gōu 花沟). In order to make passengers’ safety, the buses are driven slowly so that it takes 5~6 hours to reach the red fields. You can bring some snacks with you or buy some fruit in simple local market on the road. We suggest you take the bus departing at 08:00, so you can take some photos of sunset glow and sunset when you arrive.
