- The great pyramid was constructed somewhere around 800 CE by a civilization whose religious life centered around the worship of an ancient Mesoamerican deity known as the “Old God of Fire”. Between 245-315 CE the nearby volcano Xitle erupted and covered the city with lava, surrounding also the great pyramid.
