Brihadishvara Temple in Tamil Nadu is one of the largest Hindu temples in India.

The temple is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu.

It's Dravidian-styled temple dedicated to the God Shiva. It is located on the banks of the Cauvery River in Thanjavur. The temple was originally known as Peruvudaiyar Kovil and was also called Rajarajeswaram. It is locally known as Thanjai Periya Kovil.

   Built by Chola emperor Rajaraja I between 1003 and 1010 CE, is otherwise called Dakshina Meru or the Meru of the south.

It is built using granite and the Vimana tower above the shrine is one of the tallest in South India. The temple is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the “Great Living Chola Temples”, along with the Chola dynasty era Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple and Airavatesvara temple.
